Mainstream Media: Upcoming Movies in 2017

With a new year comes new movies, and 2017 is no exception. Movies ranging from all new concepts to anticipated sequels to remakes will all hit the big screen in 2017.
The first one to take a closer look at comes out on February 24th. This film is a new thriller called Get Out, a horror/suspense film about an African American man going to visit his Caucasian girlfriend’s family. Sounds pretty simple, right? Wrong. Once he gets there, he realizes that the estate that the family lives on is cursed. This movie stars British actor Daniel Kaluuya as the boyfriend and Allison Williams as the girlfriend.

As what seems to be the case every year, 2017 will also bring to the screen several new superhero movies. Set to premiere on July 17 is one of the most-anticipated movies of the new year: Spider-Man: Homecoming. Tom Holland becomes the third actor to portray the wall-crawler. Unlike past Spider-Man films, this one has no origin story, so this movie should be packed with action as he fights one of the main villains, the Green Goblin. Also, this Spider-Man will include Zendaya as one of the female interests. I know that I am very excited to see her in a major film like this one.

On May 26th, the fifth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean will hit theaters: Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. In this movie, Jack Sparrow, again played by Johnny Depp, faces his arch-nemesis Captain Salazar and his ghost pirates from the Devil’s Triangle. This movie is expected to be one of the highest-grossing films of the summer. Forbes’ Scott Mendelson says, “The four Pirates of the Caribbean films have earned a total of $3.729 billion worldwide from 2003 to 2011.” It is safe to say that this movie has a lot of high expectations.

On the topic of high grossing movies, June 23rd is the date for the newest Transformers movie. Transformers: The Last Knight is the fifth and, according to sources, last film in the live-action Transformer series directed by Michael Bay. This movie will be about Optimus Prime coming back to Earth after leaving to find the Creators.

This year will also bring some remakes including several classic films. One of the remakes will be 1995’s Jumanji, a film that is based on a board game that comes to life. This remake is supposed to be a fun, hilarious twist on the original. The cast includes Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Kevin Hart, and Jack Black. Just by cast alone, this one looks like a hilarious, must-see movie.

Many more must-see movies will come out this year, including some scary films, some (more) superhero stories and, of course, Disney films. The year 2017 will be a very exciting year for movies, so all of you movie watchers should keep an eye out for new films.
