Family Vacations: Why Planning Makes a Difference

Eric Lugo-Lopez, Staff Writer

Making plans with your family should be easy, but with my family it can be hard. Everything families do together should be planned around every family member. However, when everyone in the family has their own plans and they all work, it can be really hard to come together and go on one vacation together.

A couple of weekends ago my family and some family friends went down on a road trip to Orlando, Florida to celebrate my sister’s 12th birthday. To be honest I didn’t want to go because of what I saw as a lack of planning by my mom. At the last minute, she decided that she wanted to drive down instead of flying, which is what we were initially suppose to do,  but the tickets were too expensive. So, to make it work, she – two weeks before leaving – decided to rent a big SUV to get us down there safe and sound. After we decided on a date to leave, all of us who work  requested off for the weekend, but, because we were last minute with everything, my dad could not come with us. Ultimately, it was a plus because we didn’t have to pay Petsmart to keep our dog over the weekend.

Once we decided on the date and the car and the people who were coming, we then made it happen. We already had the hotel situation set and done because of my mother’s time share with Disney Resorts down in Florida. We went down on our long journey to Florida but we didn’t have any plans to do in Florida but have a birthday party for my sister and her friends in our hotel pool.  We did that plus we got to go out and explore the resort we were in, and we found a delicious Puerto Rican place called “Oh Que Bueno” which means “Oh How Good.” We found the name funny and decided to try it but it turned out to be a very good restaurant that we would go back to Florida just to eat there. At the end of the day we spent more time in the car than in the actual hotel.

The weekend was long and it was fun, but I really do think that it would had been better if we planned our trip better. Planning events or vacations with your family members is stressful because most of the time you may not want to do what your family is doing, but when it all comes down to it, they are your family so go and enjoy the time together especially if you don’t get enough family time.
