This past weekend was insane. Filled with amazing plays, amazing moments, and amazing memes. It was awesome. Sixteen teams clinched their spot in the the third round and many did so in spectacular fashion.

First, Loyola-Chicago. What a run they are having! Loyola advanced to the second round with a game-winning 3 by senior Donte Ingram in a huge upset over 6th seeded Miami. What did they do for an encore? They stunned the world again – in dramatic fashion – with a game winning shot to take down Tennessee to advance to the Sweet 16!

Another amazing upset came as Arizona was bounced out of the first round by Buffalo.

Of course, while both of these were major wins for small time teams, nothing could top the UMBC Retrievers, who made history in becoming the first number 16 seed to take down a 1 seed. Their victim, the Virginia Cavaliers, were the number one overall seed in the tournament.

The Retrievers’ victory was a game that is up there with Super Bowl III, The Miracle on Ice, and Buster Douglas knocking out Mike Tyson. Sadly, it was a short run for Ryan Odom’s guys, though, as they came up short in a valiant effort against Kansas State in the second round.

Speaking of Kansas State, they will battle the Kentucky Wildcats, a team that many wrote off this year because the roster was one of the most depleted that head coach John Calipari has ever had. When the bracket was released, the masses spoke of Kentucky’s path probably being the toughest among all the big name contenders as they were placed in the southern bracket with mighty Arizona, Tennessee, and, of course, Virginia. All three of those teams are now on the opposite side of history, and Kentucky’s challenging path may just end up being a walk in the park.

We also saw upsets by the Florida State Seminoles as they shocked #1 seeded Xavier in the second round, and Texas A&M knocked off the defending champs UNC in the second round as well.

Now that the dust has settled, only two #1 seeds, Kansas and Villanova, and two #2 seeds, Duke and Purdue, remain. The question is, which of these programs will be the next to fall? Let the Madness continue!
