If it is October it can mean only one thing: Nobels. That’s right, fall is Nobel Prize season, which means some of the brightest minds in the world are honored for their achievements in a wide array of areas.
The Nobel season began on October 1st when the Nobel Committee announced a joint Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine to James P. Allison of the United States and Tasuku Honjo of Japan, according to the committee “for their discovery of cancer therapy by inhibition of negative immune regulation.”

On October 2nd, the committee continued by awarding the Nobel Prize in Physics to Arthur Ashkin of the U.S., Gerard Mourou of France, and Donna Strickland of Canada. On October 3rd, the committee announced a shared prize in Chemistry to Americans Frances H. Arnold and George P. Smith and a separate prize to England’s Sir Gregory P. Winter.

The most anticipated prize, the Nobel Peace Prize, was announced on October 5th. This year’s winners are Denis Mukwege of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Nadia Murad of Germany. The committee lauded these two individuals for their work saying, “Each of them in their own way has helped to give greater visibility to war-time sexual violence, so that the perpetrators can be held accountable for their actions.”
