Lights, Camera, ACTION! The video camera cuts to the podium where stand  two eager 9th grade students, Noura Oseguera and Zoya Masood. The sound of two aspiring president’s voices vibrate onto the microphone as speeches are delivered live through morning announcements. The candidates have been fighting rigorously for the position, but  alas only one can win. 

One of those voices was mine.

The voices of the people rang on September 20, when the votes from about 600 students were counted. I was fortunate enough to win the job of president and will help lead Paint Branch High School’s new freshman class. 

“One of my main goals is to ensure that class of ‘23 has one of the best times here at Paint Branch.” 

I assured the  members of my class. I’m not new to school government, as I served as schoolwide SGA president of Briggs Chaney Middle School. You could say that my peers trust me and that is something I take pride in. For the election, students were asked to vote based on 30 second speeches delivered on morning announcements. 

Siddhi Patel said that she thinks I will do well as president. She told me, “I think you will do great as class president, and I hope that with you in office, we can do a lot more fun things.”

On the other hand, there are some students that don’t quite think that I can take on this responsibility. Fellow freshman Cindy Quang thinks I will do well, but worries, “It’s a lot of work and I don’t know if you can get it all done.” 

I believe that I will fulfill the role of representing the student body as president. My class will not be disappointed in their choice. 

Student Government is responsible for many of the activities that the freshman class is taking part in. The rest of the board includes freshman  Nicole Kolluri, Manjeet Nirula and Zoya Masood. Spaces for freshman class treasurer and secretary were unfilled. Luckily, two students volunteered to step up for the class and take on those important rolls. 

Being president of a generation of students is no easy feat. It comes with responsibility and determination which is something that Noura claims to have. Will she be able to rock class of 2023’s school year? Or will this president be another empty promise?
