After having an amazing rookie year where he broke franchise records and established himself as the Ravens’ top wide receiver, things have gotten difficult for Zay Flowers.
According to multiple reports, including from FOX 45 news, Owings Mills, Maryland police are investigating Flowers for an alleged domestic violence incident. The alleged assault happened last month in Owing Mills and involved Flowers and his girlfriend, Ruby Antonioli. According to a report in the Baltimore Sun, the Owings Mills police are working with Acton, Massachusetts authorities concerning the case.
Mike Hellgren from CBS SPORTS reported that the Ravens told WJZ, a local news station last week that they will “take these matters seriously” but the organization hasn’t made any further comments as of today.
Fox 45 News spoke to Rob Weinhold, a Crisis Leadership Expert, to gain some insight into how the public may view the situation without all the details. Weinhold told the station, “You have Legislatures that are clamoring for more information and many people on the street want more information.” He added that, “Everyone needs to remember process is as important as outcome.” This is important because Weinhold is expressing that people need to let the situation play out without jumping to conclusions.
Flowers has had a dynamic rookie year for the Ravens, finishing the season with 858 receiving yards and 5 receiving touchdowns. He played well in the team’s AFC Championship game, which ended with a heartbreaking loss to the Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs. Despite his strong game, Flowers took a lot of criticism for fumbling into the end zone and a poorly-timed for an unsportsmanlike taunting penalty, which resulted in a $10,927 fine from the league.
As of today, Flowers has not been charged with any crime as investigators continue to gather information.
UPDATE (2/20/24): According to Baltimore Banner writers Justin Fenton and Tim Prudente: “Baltimore County Police have closed without charges an investigation into an incident of alleged domestic violence last month involving Ravens wide receiver Zay Flowers.”
