Duke vs. Maryland – Why it Never Was a True Rivalry
Saturday March 1st marks the final ACC rivalry game between the Maryland and Duke Men’s’ Lacrosse. With Maryland moving to the Big 10 next year, the two teams may possibly never play each other again. Duke won the national championship last year, while Maryland has finished in second place two consecutive years prior. In this game, Duke was ranked number 1 and Maryland number 2 in most power polls. Both teams came into this game undefeated, with Maryland at 3-0 and Duke at 4-0. The game, even though it was early in the season, has play-off implications and could affect who wins the ACC championship.
In this contest, Duke’s Jordan Wolf put the first points on the board for either team with 10:41 to go in the first half. Maryland quickly followed suit with a goal of their own from Mike Chanenchuk to begin a career night for him. Chanenchuk would score his second goal of the day with 9:16 to go in the first to give the Terps a 2-1 lead. Duke would score again in the first quarter to make it 2-2 at the end of the period. To start the second period, Maryland’s Jay Carlson put one in the back of the net on a man-up opportunity after Duke’s Brendan Fowler received a penalty for a push in the back. Duke then proceeded to take their final lead of the day after going on a three-goal run to make the score 5-3. Colin Heacock added one more to the board for the Terps, and Chanenchuk would score again in the first half to bring his total to three goals.
Maryland’s defense proved to be its strong suit of the day as their defense went 26 minutes and 26 seconds without allowing a goal. Maryland’s offense also went on a seven-to- nothing scoring streak that ended with 14 minutes left in the contest to bring the score to 10-5. Maryland would not score again after their scoring streak. Chanenchuk finished the day with 5 goals, tying his career high. Both teams started off strong, but Maryland came out on top after dousing Duke’s comeback efforts. The Terrapins defeated the Blue Devils during what may very well be the last time these programs play each other on the lacrosse field with the ending score, the Terps 10 and the Blue Devils 6. Following this game, Maryland has gone 3-1 with their one loss of the season to the Tar Heels of the University of North Carolina.
