Talented Rising Star

A Closer Look at Normani Kordei

Diamond Scott, Staff Writer

Normani Kordei is an American singer and dancer who rose to fame after winning the second season of X Factor USA along with Lauren Jauregui, Ally Brooks, Dinah Jane, and Camila Cabello who soon became known as the popular and successful girl group, Fifth Harmony. The girls have hit songs, such as “Sledgehammer”, “BO$$”, “Worth it,” and more. In December 2016, Camila Cabello split from the group in search of her own solo career leaving the four girls. Yet, it wasn’t until March 2018 that the rest of the band decided to break up, after six long years.

A few months after the group split in 2018, Normani released her first single for the film Love Simon, titled “Love Lies” with Khalid. The duet jump started Normani’s solo career. She was soon making a name for herself as a solo R&B/Pop star, and people became excited to learn what the young artist had in store.

Since, then she has released a few tracks and a music video, which is a live performance of her single “Waves” featuring 6LACK. Additionally, she is the opening act for Ariana Grande’s Sweetener/Thank U, Next tour. While the singer hasn’t done anything too big yet, it’s clear judging from her solo music that Normani has a lot of offer as an artist. She is a phenomenal dancer, and not only focusing on making music, but also working hard to identify her character in the industry.

Normani’s style is unique, and being a solo artist suits her personality. While Fifth Harmony was good for her, as a solo artist she isn’t being held back. On her own, Normani can freely express herself and have more opportunity to what she wants in her career. So far the results are outstanding, and her small body of work has only made fans crave the release of her first solo album even more.
