The NFL and Major League Baseball – Backtalk
Smacktalk with Josh Doane-Malotte
October is one of the best months for sports. Football season is in full swing, hockey and basketball season are beginning and, best of all, MLB has its playoffs! It has been a great and very competitive season, as even the wild-card races came down to the last game. Despite the failure of the local teams to make it to the post-season, I thought the season was great!
The Cy Young voting won’t be half as close as the MVP voting. Clayton Kershaw and Max Scherzer are the definite winners of the Cy Young in the NL and the AL, respectively. There is no disputing it. Scherzer started 32 games for the Tigers and had a record of 21-3 with a 2.90ERA. With Scherzer striking out 240 batters and the Tigers’ run support, it was hard to get a win against Scherzer on the hill. In the NL, Kershaw was exceptional. Kershaw had an era of 1.98, struck out 232 batters and won 16 games.
The AL MVP race is tight. Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera has been exceptional two years in a row. He had 44 homers, 137 runs batted in and led the league with a batting average of .348. I want to say that first baseman Chris Davis will win MVP. However, Davis, who led the league in both RBI’s (138) and home runs (53), wasn’t able to lead his team to the post-season. Cabrera, on the other hand, was a major contributor to his team’s 93 wins. If you cannot lead your team to the Promised Land, you are not an MVP.
The NL MVP race is also between two outstanding players, Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina and Pirates center fielder Andrew McCutchen. McCutchen batted just under .300 (.296), had 21 home runs, 84 RBIs, and stole 27 bases, all while making incredible plays in the field. But, I think Molina will end up winning MVP due to his strong batting average of .317 and an OPS of .836, all while handling a strong pitching staff.
The ALCS should be a good match-up as the Red Sox will take on the Tigers. I don’t think the Tigers will have any problem beating the Sox. Scherzer, Fister and Verlander are all great pitchers with excellent run support. The Tigers led the league in batting average and Red Sox pitchers will have no way to shut out Miggy. Detroit will take the series in five.
The NLCS will be a better match-up that will probably go at least 6 games. The Dodgers and Cardinals will play great games this upcoming week, but it will be pretty hard for the Cards to beat one of the best pitching rotations around. Kershaw and Zack Greinke may be the best one-two punch in the league. I have the Dodgers winning in 6.
The World Series will be great! Four of the best pitchers in the league will be facing off. I think this will be a great series that will probably go 7 games! At the end of the day, I think that the Tigers will make up for getting swept last year. The Tigers will win in 7, and Miggy will be the World Series MVP.
