School Start Times Should Change
January 29, 2015
Are you always late to class or always tired in class? If so, then you definitely need more sleep. Students want more sleep time so that they could focus better during daytime. Getting enough quality sleep at the right time helps you function well throughout the day. People who are sleep-deficient are less productive at work or school. They take longer to finish tasks, have slower reaction times, and make more mistakes. Tired students sleep during class time which affects their grades negatively. Sleep helps your brain work properly, forming new pathways to help you learn and remember information. Sleep plays an important role in your physical health, as well. For example, sleep is involved in healing and repair of your heart and blood vessels. Starting school later means an added cost for schools.
Despite the cost, if all high schools students voted, the highest percent of students would definitely want a later time. I would like the county to let students make the decision because students are the ones getting the education, stressing over our grades and losing focus in class due to fatigue. Changing the start time will help students especially athletes who are taking AP classes or honors classes and those who put in long hours after school.
