Mexican Authorities Arrest 18 in Raid, Including 13 Police Officers

Mexican authorities, on Tuesday, October 8th, arrested 18 people, including 13 Mexican police officers, on alleged kidnapping charges in Guerrero, Mexico.

CNN’s Catherine E. Shoichet reported that the 13 officers arrested were federal police officers who allegedly belonged to a kidnap and murder gang. The suspects, believed to be involved with seven homicides and four kidnappings in Guerrero, were turned in to prosecutors and now face charges of murder, kidnapping, and drug possession. If convicted on all charges of rape and kidnapping, each will face no less than 70 years in prison.

Shoichet reported that without a citizen’s tip to the whereabouts of the bodies in a remote hill site in Acapulco, investigators wouldn’t have discovered the victims. Government security spokesman Eduardo Sanchez told reporters, “The arrests showed the government’s commitment to cracking down on any corruption within its ranks.”

While the Mexican government encourages civilians to report details of crimes and any leads they may have, Mexican citizens are hesitant to report crimes because of corrupt officials and fear of reprisal attacks.
