Expectation vs. Reality

Romance Edition

Picture this; as you ready yourself for your first date, you spend hours trying to look as fabulous as possible and dress to the nines to impress your date. You hear a knock at the door and fly downstairs and are met with a bouquet of roses held by your knight in shining armor. Not only does he bring you flowers but he also opens the car door for you, pays for dinner, and even walks you to your door at the end of the night.

Unfortunately, what’s really going to happen is that you and your not-so-special date go to Chick-Fil-A and engage in some pointless conversation as you text your friend questioning why you liked him in the first place and that you are contemplating jumping out the bathroom window.

Ladies (and Gentlemen), it’s true – flashy Cinderella-story movie dates rarely ever happen in real life.

Let’s take a closer look at another all-too-common scenario. You come to school all dolled up because you’ve finally summoned the courage to talk to that hunk you constantly eye in the hallway. So, what happens next? Movies and TV would have you think that you, like many a starlet, will flawlessly approach the guy and make a smooth introduction. However, the reality – as we know all too well – is that when you do finally approach the dude you will forget how to speak English.

Of course, movies and TV also show this crash-and-burn approach – like when Cady, in Mean Girls, barfs all over Aaron Samuels shoes. But in the “it all works out in the end” world of film and television, the guy finds it charming or cute, and she still finds a way into his heart. Unfortunately, in the real world, puking on a guy’s shoes just means he’ll be giving you a bill for new Jordan’s rather than his number.
