Thanksgiving More like Thanks for nothing

Thanksgiving is a day when families gather at the dinner table to have a ginormous dinner, celebrate and give thanks for what they have, but do people really understand the true meaning of Thanksgiving? Are people really celebrating Thanksgiving according to definition or are all of our traditions out of whack and meaningless?

The 21st century version of Thanksgiving is food, football, and shopping. Families gather, eat, and go. The fast lifestyle of today’s America has certainly caught up with this tradition.

It is absurd that people, on this “family” day, eat as fast as possible, or not at all, just to be in the front of the line before the store opens for its “amazing” Black Friday sales. That people will rush out of their aunt’s house to head to the mall to get those great Christmas deals is absurd. Christmas is not for a month, so it seems crazy that people run around to get their gifts just because of a good sale. Black Friday is not worth the rush; people can easily use that whole month to go shopping rather than rush to get it done all in one evening.

This whole idea of Black Friday has ruined the tradition of Thanksgiving. People die over these sales when they could be alive, sitting at the dinner table celebrating all the things in life for which they are thankful. After all, family is always everything, but, it seems, families excuse this saying for the night to shop.

Even football has disrupted this holiday.  There is nothing wrong with some TV entertainment, but for the people in the NFL, they have to choose their career over their families. They don’t get a break like most Americans do because they have to play football, but at what cost?  To be away from their families, to not get a break. It all destroys the meaning of the holiday.

America has changed the tradition of Thanksgiving for the worse. People do not seem to be thankful for what they have; they just see it as a holiday, to celebrate briefly and then head t to the mall. They do not appreciate the history behind the holiday, or the true meaning of it. They simply see food and Christmas on the horizon. Thanksgiving should just be changed to Quickgiving then.
