Pluto x Baby Pluto by Future and Lil Uzi Vert
Rating: 4 ½ stars
This collaborative album by American rappers Lil Uzi Vert and Future is by far one of the best albums of 2020. Lil Uzi Vert’s style is dark emo with a dash of sensitivity and Future’s style use of autotune for both rapping and singing makes them an ideal duo. Their clashing music styles are refreshing because it is usually not seen in rap music. What makes this album truly unique is that fans can clearly see that they’ve learned to feed off of each other’s energy like old friends.
Pluto x Baby Pluto is a 16-song album that showcases both Lil Uzi Vert and Future’s competitive spirit as they go bar for bar on several of the songs. Uzi brings a reinvigorating energy that challenges Future’s ability to simply coast on a song instead of dominating, as in his previous albums Save Me and High off Life. This album shows how different musical styles can sound as one, and how important it is to be challenged because it can show the audience a different side of a performer’s skills.
This album has definitely left an impression on fans. Uzi and Future is clearly a great duo and fans are looking forward to another collaboration. Their lyrical ability and nonchalant vibes are exactly what makes this album so great. Standout tracks include, “Drankin N Smokin,” “Stripes Like Burberry,”“She Never Been To Pluto.”
Ungodly Hour by Chloe x Halle
Rating: 5 stars
The dynamic sister duo proves once again that they are here to stay. Two years ago, the Bailey sisters released their coming-of-age album, The Kids Are Alright. Since then, they have been quite busy with being nominated for two Grammys and starring in three seasons for TV sitcom Grownish. During all this, they have managed to put out an album that deserves high praise.
Ungodly Hour consists of 12 songs that show the maturity of Chloe x Halle since their last album. The Bailey sisters have mastered the art of slowly shedding how the world had seen them as teenagers, but now sees them as adults that are shedding their innocence gracefully. The pulsing instrumentals and heavenly tones are exactly what is expected of the Bailey sisters. However, they make up for it by weaving, rapping, and singing effortlessly– and that makes the audience fall more in love with this album. Standout tracks include, “Do It,’ “Forgive Me,” “Ungodly Hour.”
Good News by Megan Thee Stallion
Rating: 5 stars
The captivating and talented female rapper Megan Thee Stallion released her first studio album late last year. Amid releasing this album, Stallion has proved that she can definitely have longevity in the rap game. Although she has had a rough year, she still manages to celebrate life and women empowerment throughout her album and that is why this album is so cool–not to mention that the featured lineup is amazing. It includes; Beyonce, Lil Durk, SZA, Young Thug, and many more.
Good News is a 17-song album that inspires confidence and the ability to make the audience empathize with her. Stallion’s wit and delivery is what makes her so captivating. Her lyricism and flow are simple yet strategic, which is refreshing because it is not seen often from female rappers. What makes this album different is that it has the ability to have you either in your feelings or have a full-fledged dance party.
Standout tracks include,”Body,” “Savage Remix,” and “Girls in the Hood.”
