All This Homework is Killing Me

Cayla Reed, Staff Writer

Homework has become a big problem for students in all grades. It’s too much for no solid reason. Kids fall asleep after studying, only to wake up a few hours later.

When homework is graded only for completion, not accuracy, it seems irrelevant. In cases like this, homework is busy work and seems punitive rather than positive.  Homework is supposed to give you practice and help a student better understand his/her work, so giving a person who doesn’t know what s/he is doing too many problems or too many questions only reinforces how they feel in class, clueless.

Another problem is that when you have 7 classes in middle school and high school and you have extracurricular activities as well, it becomes too much for students to play their sports and do homework, especially homework that isn’t very important or necessary. If homework or projects are to be assigned, they should be assigned on specific days, for specific classes. That way it would be easier for students, and they would all have the time to complete homework.

Projects are also a big problem. It seems all classes decide to assign projects around the same time, so it becomes very stressful to students because all too often they’re also assigned at the end of the quarter.

A little organization by teachers would go a long way toward helping students. If certain classes had specific days to give homework.

It would definitely impact kids in a good way. More kids would do their homework. Homework that is assigned should also mean something and actually help the student and be important to studies.

Many kids have to go to band or football practice until 6 p.m. or later and, then go home and do chores and homework so they end up going to sleep at 2 a.m. just to wake up 3 hours later and repeat. It’s not healthy for kids to have all this homework and be expected to do it all with little time.
