Sports Eligibility Not an Easy Mark for All Students

Have you ever gone to a high-school sports event and seen real talent? If you have, it is because of the athletes playing the games. However, some athletes don’t get to show all their talents due to unfair GPA rules.

Sports eligibility has been raised to a 2.3 GPA or higher by school districts. In order to play sports, you must maintain your grades, but many student-athletes are being taken away from sports because of this. Not all kids are determined and achieve the criteria as easily as others. It is hard for them to maintain their grades and play sports, which is often an escape from problems. Instead of raising the GPA, schools should have a better understanding of the difficulty and provide more help than what is already available for struggling students.

Students playing sports in high school usually have been playing sports for their whole lives. All they know is athletics, so having them taken away because of this higher GPA is not fair. Sports are their escape from stress and school. They are not strong students, so they have sports to give them an opportunity to have a better chance at success in life. A good athlete can earn a scholarship for sports. In order for these students to play, they should receive more support. Often, when students try to raise their grades, they cannot find the support or belief in them that they need.

The rise in the GPA should be changed back to its original 2.0 GPA or higher which should be maintained in order to play sports, but having under a 2.0 is unacceptable. Even if school is hard and causes difficulty, a hard work ethic and dedication can help students maintain a 2.0 GPA.
