Shakespeare and His Importance

Lori Maszkiewicz, Staff Writer

Students whine ever year when they learn they have to tackle yet another one of Shakespeare’s plays in English class.

MCPS English classes list Shakespeare as part of the course curriculum, so teachers can’t just change the curriculum, omit Shakespeare and choose to read what the students want just because students don’t want to read Macbeth or Hamlet. The truth is, teachers are probably quite tired of the complaints and try to make the play as enjoyable as possible for students.

So, the next time you are assigned another Shakespeare play, or any other novel for that matter, try your best to hold back on the complaints. There will always be things in life you don’t want to do but have to anyway. It’s just a part of life; it’s something you have to learn to deal with. If not, you run the risk of being the one who “… doth protest too much, methinks.”
