Are You a Stereotype?

Eleanor Kwende, Staff Writer

Have you ever felt that because you are a certain race or act a certain way it automatically puts you in a category?

Most people have felt the sting of being stereotyped. Stereotypes are not something people should use to judge others. You shouldn’t be put into a category just because you’re a certain race or come from an area with a bad reputation. Judging others on shallow grounds is wrong.

Think of yourself in the position of being judged. Don’t just automatically see someone and assume they’re this way or that. You should asses every person you meet and first see how they act when they are not around friends or when they are in a different environment. This is because some people act differently around people they want to become friends with so, by altering their characteristics. Characteristics are something you have right from birth and it’s not really something that you can change. Without them, there wouldn’t be a distinction between humans, and being distinctive shouldn’t be a reason to undermine someone.

If you judge a person solely on their distinctive features, you’re simply being judgmental. All it takes is to ask yourself what causes them to be different or why are they different? Plus you never know- they could be someone you might become friends with. It’s like the saying goes “Don’t judge a book by its cover.”
