Legion of Boom – A Closer Look at Seahawks Vaunted Secondary

Max Mensah, Staff Writer

What hits like a train, covers like a blanket, and steals anything in their area? Welcome to the Seattle Seahawks, arguably the best defense in NFL history. In fact, the Seattle Seahawks’ defense has become one of the more dominant forces across the league.

In 2013, Seattle led the league in defensive passing yards allowed, defensive passer rating, total team yards allowed and many other key defensive categories. Kam Chancellor, the team’s strong safety, has been a nightmare for anyone carrying the ball. Standing 6’3” and weighing in at 232 pounds, Chancellor lays the boom on whoever crosses his path.

Earl Thomas, the free safety, has made a name for himself in the league as well. Coming to the league, there were doubts that he could play that position because he was too small, at only 5′ 10 202, which he quickly put to rest. I’d be a little nervous about taking a big shot if I were a Patriot wide-receiver – Chancellor and Thomas are beasts.

New cornerback Byron Maxwell was a second-string player behind former Seahawk and now Patriot Brandon Browner, but he has not disappointed since stepping up to the starting position.

Last but not least is cornerback Richard Sherman. Often called one of the top 3 corners in the league right now, Sherman backs up his talk by controlling his side of the field.

While Seattle and the Legion of Boom came up just short in their attempt to win a 2nd straight Super Bowl,  a feat that had not been accomplished in 10 years by, ironically, their opponent,  the New England Patriots, the Seahawks and their strong defense will, undoubtedly, be one of the favorites again next season.
