A Closer Look at Google Glass

Darren Zhang, Staff Writer

Have you ever wanted to experience the futuristic technology that is portrayed in sci-fi books and movies?

The Glass guide describes the Glass’s colors as charcoal, tangerine, shale, cotton and sky. Matt Swider, a tech writer and reviewer for techradar and a Google Glass owner reviewed the Glass. Swider measured the Glass’s dimensions to be 5.25-inches at its widest point and 8-inches at its longest point. He says that Google Glass is lightweight (42 grams, 1.48 oz) and it is comfortable with the vision glass piece being out of line of sight.

Swider moved on to the flaws of the Glass’s design which include a bulky battery that has poor battery life to sustain the huge power-consuming activities the Glass does such as voice command reading/sending text messages, map navigations, and using apps. Despite having the ability to use apps, there is limited space of 2GB. At first, Swider developed headaches as he strained his right eye to focus on the tiny prism in the top right corner of his vision. He described it as unnatural to have just one eye focus on a screen while the other eye is looking in a different direction, but his eyes and brain adjusted a few days later to the point of it feeling natural.

The glasses cost approximately $1,500.00, but this was for only a prototype. However, Google halted Glass’s production and the glasses becoming unavailable for sale. The main reason isn’t clear, but it’s understandable due to the problems described by Swider.
