On February 19th, The Washington Post National Weekly editor Carla Broyles visited Paint Branch High School to speak to journalism students during lunch about her career and the process that has led her to her current position.

Ms. Broyles talked about her experiences working in other journalism-related industries, such as design. She also gave an in=depth summary of the opportunities that led her to each position, including working at a newspaper throughout college. Ms. Broyles admitted that these opportunities, while time consuming, pushed her farther into journalism and helped her become who she is today.

Although some students may have just been there for free pizza, others, including those from PB’s television production, radio, journalism, and yearbook programs, came to hear her talk about her career and receive helpful advice for pursuing a career in journalism-related fields. It was an enlightening experience for many. Journalism student Hana Gebru stated, “I felt like we were very alike in terms of writing ability because I am also a professional, and she was very inspiring.”

This event, organized by Paint Branch Signature Coordinator Ms. Candia, was an effective and successful event that allowed students an opportunity to hear from a true professional in the industry.

Paint Branch journalism teacher and advisor for Mainstream, Mr. Woodward, felt the event presented a great opportunity for kids who have an interest in any journalism-related career. “I think Ms. Broyles’ experiences in journalism really provided some insight into what it is really like to work in journalism,” he said.
