Summer Packets = Summer Stress

Why Summer Packets Are a Waste

Cayla Reed, Staff Writer

The school system has made summer break a time for studying and doing work. Starting in elementary school, students have been given packets of work preparing them for the next school year. The packets they complete are turned in for a grade in the beginning of the next school year. This is wrong – summer is a time to take a break from school and from work.

It gets serious when high school students have to do summer packets several classes especially when many high school students get jobs that take up most of the time in summer. The student, already tired from work, does not have time to complete the task of summer packets.

Summer packets is that they are made for students to keep the knowledge they learned the previous school year and prepare students for the next year. The packets are made for students to do over break, but what most often happen is students either lose the packet or complete the packet at the last minute or when school starts. Summer packets are pointless in these cases because students don’t spend quality time on it.

Summer packets are, most of the time, graded for completion and can give students a good head start for grades.  If a student completes the assignment by the date it’s due, it can start him or her off right. When most students rush at the last minute to complete the packet and get no knowledge out of it, which is the main purpose of the packets, then summer packets are what really fail.
