Counselors meet with PB Seniors

On September 28 2015, the counselors held a senior conference during lunch in the Principal’s Team room to discuss any questions or concerns about the college application process. The seniors were required to have a meeting in the summer with the counselors to discuss college applications, see whether or not they had enough credits to graduate and to answer any questions about the college application process. However some students couldn’t make the conference, the meeting was held to inform those who missed their meetings information.

During this meeting Mrs.Ruffner talked about the college application process. Mrs.Ruffner, a school counselor opened with, “Most of you are probably here because you missed the summer conference and need to catch up on any information.” Before that however they talked about the credits seniors need to graduate first and the importance of passing the HSA’s. They mentioned that in order to get your transcripts sent off your college, you needed to fill out a blue card and send it to the counseling office. If the school you were applying only accepted mailed applications, you needed to send a blue card as well as an envelope with the address of your school filled out already. If your schools accept electronic applications, they only needed the blue card. The counselors mentioned the difference between the weighted and unweighted GPAs, weighted GPAs give an extra point if you took Honors or AP courses. The counselors then mentioned the importance of Naviance and how seniors needed at least two recommendations from teachers. The main point they wanted to make clear was that seniors needed to link Naviance to Common Applications, but you needed to finish the Common Applications before you could. A little suggestion from Mrs.Kimmel, “If you need a recommendation from either a teacher or counselor, you need to give the teacher or counselor at least a month in advance. Anything after that probably could not get done.” Mr. Oliphant added, “This application only happens once and the decision you make now will affect your life after high school. You need to make wise decisions when it comes to getting the things for your applications.”
