Textbook or Tablet?

Do you ever get tired of looking at a screen? If you answered yes, you may have to get used to it, because in schools the use of electronic devices for education is only  increasing. However, while schools move forward in their digital world, they should work to keep a more equal balance among the number of electronic devices they use and the use of paper texts.

For teens, screens are a large part of everyday life, but if those screens became part of every aspect of their school day it could get pretty miserable.

For schools, electronic devices such as Chromebooks and tablets can be very expensive, with the overall cost being very close to textbooks. Yes, on computers, everything is included or easily accessible such as getting updates for textbooks and access to Google Docs. Also, everything is very organized. Another factor is that constant or only screen time for learning is  not for everyone.

Also, tablets have too many distraction. Even though teachers may be watching to, they can’t be watching all students at once. Some distractions may include using the camera or searching for other sites instead of doing  their work.

Using an electronic device increases the number of excuses available for students not to turn their work in on time.

Schools should keep paper books in place, especially for English classes, because some people like to interact with books. There’s something about holding a book and reading it that gives people a connection with the book. There is something about looking at the printed words on old paper instead of looking at  a screen with brightness that makes books better.

Another issue with computer-or tablet-based texts is that schools cannot rely on the connection in the school all the time. When a large numbers of students are on the devices, the Internet connection can crash. Also, there may not be a device available for everyone, which creates problems  when assignments are done individually.  Another thing to think of with computers or tablets is the chance of dropping a device which would lead to expensive repair. You can drop a book and not worry about breaking it.

Textbooks should not be replaced by computers and tablets, because we cannot rely on the Internet connection or devices themselves entirely. The devices can shut off anytime and there are not always enough for everyone. Also, schools will have to much more money on devices each year, especially if devices are dropped or broken.
