Battling Our Screen Addiction

Why It’s Important to Push Kids Outside and Away from Screens

As time passes, technology grows. However, while some see this growth as positive, the truth is, it has become too much of a distraction in our world

I am not afraid to say that I feel that I am addicted to my cellular device, my TV, my iPad and other devices in my world. Despite these addictions, I do realize the negative impact that such dependence can have on me and has on our society and our health.

My generation didn’t grow up on iPhones or Androids; we actually went outside, explored with our minds and enjoyed life. Today’s younger generation is distracted and blinded from the reality I grew up with from day one as technology has seemingly taken over the world.

This is all very unfortunate. We live on a planet that has so many beautiful places to explore, but no one wants to take the time to learn about these places, it seems. Instead of walking our pets, we just play the Wii, Xbox, PlayStation or a game on our cell phones or, for younger children, a tablet or iPad. Parents let kids watch videos or play games instead of encouraging them to go outside to play.

Perhaps we are too quick to jump to easy entertainment and we certainly seem to have forgotten that we have only one life to live. If we continue to waste it by sitting on our butts and looking at the screens that surround us, but never out the window, I fear we are doomed.

I will never forget all the bruises and scars I’ve gotten from playing outside, especially in the summer. Today, I watch reality TV and shows about survival instead of getting out there and experiencing it for myself.

We watch reality TV shows and complain about what’s happening on the show and in the lives of the stars as if that is what’s really happening in our lives.
