Why Making the Honor Roll Matters to Me

Malik McCallum, s

I want to be successful in high school, so what I’ve done is to try and make my first honor roll here in my first year of high school.

Making honor roll is important because it’s strongly linked to the positive outcomes we value. School offers the gift of education, and nothing is going to change that. Children who are my age need to be taught to do math and reading at a high level so they can be successful.  However, they have to embrace this as well. They shouldn’t be frustrated about what they’re reading and how they are reading because that is all part of learning. The same goes for math.

However, this can be tough to accept when you are struggling. Getting an A in math is very tough for me, but it’s important for me to get my grades up and to make them look better.

The same issues arise when I read as well.  I admit that I have a reading problem. When I struggle, I get angry about it. This is hard when I read aloud, because I stutter and get stuck on the word I’ve just read to fix it and then read it again clearly. When I read aloud, I  read slowly and I feel like I am wasting everyone else’s time not reading clearly or not reading at all. This is why I work hard to be a better reader and why I aspire to make the honor roll.
