It is with great pleasure that we present to you the first edition of Mainstream for the 2021-2022 school year – and the first issue to appear in print since February 2020.

At the beginning of this school year, Mainstream came to the decision to transition from the traditional “newspaper” format to a more modern and appealing “magazine” format for all print editions moving forward. Since the first semester, we as the only two Advanced Journalism students in class, have taken on the roles of editors-in-chief, dedicating our time to learning how to use the layout software, InDesign, and creating new spreads accordingly.

One factor that made putting together our first print issue in two years very difficult is the size of our staff. This year’s Mainstream staff is smaller than anticipated, consisting of merely 15 students in total. As we entered the second semester, however, seven students from the Journalism I class fortunately joined the editorial team alongside us. Over the last four weeks, these individuals have quickly and efficiently learned the functions of InDesign despite having no prior experience.

Nonetheless, this edition of Mainstream includes a diverse collection of timely written articles and creative designs. From the replacement of SROs in schools by CEOs to the reopening of the Panther Zen Den, the Mainstream staff has diligently worked to produce meaningful content after developing their writing, interview, and research skills during the first semester. We sincerely appreciate the hard work and patience of our staff as we learned to adjust to two drastic changes to Mainstream this year. As journalists, it is our responsibility to keep our readers informed of current events taking place in the PB community and beyond.
