A Death That Shouldn’t Have Happened
The Tragic Story of Jahiri McMath
Thirteen-year-old Jahiri McMath made national headlines after being declared brain dead after suffering serious complications following surgery to take out her tonsils, adenoids and extra sinus tissue in December 2013.
McMath’s surgery, which took place at Children’s Hospital & Research Center in Oakland, California, apparently went well, reported CNN. McMatch’s family members told multiple sources that she was alert and talking after the surgery.
McMath’s uncle told CNN that she asked for a Popsicle a little while after the procedure because her throat hurt. According CNN, the family reported that shortly after surgery and after requesting the Popsicle, “in an intensive care unit, the girl began bleeding profusely.”
Days later she went into cardiac arrest, and they proclaimed her brain-dead.
Since then, McMath’s body has been released to her family. According to the Los Angeles Times, the McMatch’s family attorney says her body has been deteriorating horribly since she has been declared brain-dead. The Times also reported that a neurologist said that Jahiri is unable to breathe on her own and is not receiving any blood to her brain.
According to the Times, Jahiri “was released first to the Alameda County coroner and then to her family, and is now the responsibility of her mother, who has moved her to a facility that has not been identified because of threats Nolan said he and her family have received.”
