NBA Comes Down Hard on Sterling
NBA Players, PB Students Respond to Owner’s Actions
Donald Sterling, the embattled owner of the Los Angeles Clippers, was banned for life from the NBA by new NBA Commissioner Adam Silver for voicing racist remarks. Silver also laid down a 2.5-million-dollar fine and encouraged the league’s owners to vote for the forced sale of the team.
These actions are a direct response to a very controversial rant Sterling made while being audio recorded by his then-girlfriend. In the rant, Sterling made numerous negative comments about black people, for which critics deemed him to be a racist. According to Silver, Sterling admitted the voice was his.
Players and owners across the NBA have voiced their disgust and disappointment. High-profile figures such as Lebron James, Michael Jordan, and Magic Johnson, who was one of the targets of Sterling’s rant, have all gone to state the NBA has “no room for people like [Sterling].”
Teams have also been quietly protesting Sterling’s continued involvement in the NBA. Upon his initial address of the controversy, Commissioner Silver promised a speedy investigation. He would deliver on this promise as in only three days he announced Sterling’s punishment. Analysts spoke highly in favor of Silver’s handling of the situation.
Dallas Mavericks’ owner Mark Cuban tweeted he was “in 100% agreement of Silver’s stance.” With a league-wide vote involving twenty-nine owners in the NBA to decide if Sterling should be forced to sell off the team, a handful already have spoken of their stance in favor of the sale
“I like [the decision],” says sophomore Kevin Tragoning “It was a good move.”
Boys’ varsity basketball player Doug Gardner had a more in-depth response to the situation. “I think it’s been good for him to be banned to teach him a lesson,” says Gardner. “It’s not just about basketball or the NBA.”
