Terrorism has been a topic on the minds of many world leaders in recent years. Terrorist attacks against nations around the world have left leaders searching for answers and taking precautions and measures to prevent future attacks. One of these responses has caused division around the world – the Executive Order signed by President Donald Trump that bans immigrants from seven countries in the Middle East from entering the United States.

Reaction to the ban has been mixed. Some leaders have spoken out against the ban, including several U.S. allies. U.K. Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson stated that it is “divisive and wrong to stigmatise because of nationality.” Mehmet Simsek, the Deputy Prime Minister of Turkey, and Justin Trudeau, the Prime Minister of Canada, both stated that their countries would continue to welcome refugees across their borders. On Twitter, Trudeau said “Canadians will welcome you, regardless of your faith. Diversity is our strength.”

Other leaders have voiced their support for the travel ban. Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said “it is vital that every nation is able to control who comes across its borders.” On Twitter, Dutch far-right Party for Freedom founder and leader Geert Wilders said, “No more immigration from any Islamic country is exactly what we need.”

Though U.S. federal judges recently suspended the travel ban, President Trump expressed that he believes it will be reinstated in the near future.
