Have you ever had first-day jitters? You know the feeling; it is an anxiously overwhelming sense of excitement, but also one that carries just a little fear.
Paint Branch sophomore Serenity Pittman, a self-described introvert, is no stranger to this feeling. Last year, as a freshman, Serenity was not necessarily scared of starting high school but she did feel an overwhelming sense of not knowing what would transpire over the year. Now that she has a year under her belt, Serenity feels less unsure and more confident about what she wants.
As she takes on her sophomore year, Serenity already knows that she wants to attend Spelman College where she hopes to study something in the medical field. As for why she sees herself at Spelman, she says, “I’ve heard about the school through social media, and the fact it’s an all-girls school located in Atlanta also influenced my decision.” The medical field is popular with the students at PB who are, like Serenity, enrolled in the Medical Careers Program. Serenity says “ Even when I was younger I’ve always wanted to be a doctor and help people. Especially kids.”
Though Serenity may no longer be a nervous freshman, she still shares the chaotic life of a teenage girl. After one thing ends another one happens, which is perhaps why she would title a song about her life “Chaotic Mess” - meaning, “Every day a new stressful thing is happening.” We can all agree that Serenity is not the only one with a “Chaotic Mess” of a life.
As a young adult still figuring out what she believes and wants to do, Serenity has taken a stance supporting The Women’s Rights Movement in the hope of creating a better life for the women of our country. “I haven’t been able to go to a protest yet but I want to,” says Serenity. She shows her advocacy by sharing posts on social media and speaking out about the issues.
Being a teenage girl is hard as we all have our “chaotic messes.” As Serenity pursues a life in the medical field with determination and dedication, she can leave the chaotic mess behind and reach her goal of being a pediatrician.
