Nicolas Maduro Moros, the former president of Venezuela, has been taken into American custody on allegations of narco-terrorism, drug trafficking, corruption, and other related charges, according to a press briefing that occurred on January 3rd at Mar-a-Lago, President Trump’s Florida home.
Maduro was taken into custody late Friday night during a mission that was not publicly disclosed as only top military officials were said to be aware of the operation. Congressional leaders have stated that they were not informed about the operation in advance.
In a press briefing held on Saturday morning, Trump stated that no American lives or equipment had been lost. He later stated that the U.S. will be running Venezuela until officials believe it is safe to hand over power to the proper people.
Maduro is currently set to appear in U.S. court to face the charges against him, and will be held in Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center until a ruling is made. Lawyers announced that Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, will plead not guilty to these charges and will not seek bail, at this time.
