NFL Mid-Season Report: MVP & Super Bowl

Aman Anand, Online Editor

With the NFL season already at week nine, it’s time for some mid season analysis. Although there are 7 weeks left, we have a decent picture of who’s contending for division titles and awards. With a few players and teams off to historic starts, let’s take a look at some predictions for how the rest of the season will turn out.

The league MVP, so far, has been a slight surprise: Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck has been on a historic tear. Everyone knew he would be a top-tier quarterback eventually, but not this early in his career. Through nine games in 2014, Luck has thrown for 3,085 yards and 26 touchdowns. He has carried the Colts dynamic offense, which leads the NFL in yards and points per game. He’s on pace for around 5,484 yards and 46 touchdowns—a legendary pace.

The most surprising team goes to the Arizona Cardinals, who are at the top of the NFL right now. The Cardinals, who didn’t even make the playoffs last year, have never had true star power like Peyton Manning and Co., or Marshawn Lynch and the “Legion of Boom,” but they seem to have found it, as they are 8-1 so far this season. Though they’ve been slowly improving the past few years, I never thought they’d be as good as they are right now.

The Carolina Panthers are the most disappointing team so far. They went 12-4 last year with one of the best defenses in football, but this year, they are 3-5-1, and the defense has looked miserable. I had high hopes for Carolina and thought they’d be back seeking more than a one-and-done playoff campaign. So far, it doesn’t look like they’ll even have a playoff campaign in 2014.

The best team in the AFC right now is very debatable, but I have to go with the Denver Broncos. Despite the fact that they were absolutely punished by the Patriots in week nine, “Peyton Manning & Friends” are simply more intimidating than the one-man-team of Tom Brady. Consistency is key for the Broncos, and the Pats have not shown much of it, losing to Miami and getting blown out by Kansas City.

Despite the Cardinals’ early success, I have to say that the NFC’s best team is the Eagles. The Eagles are a powerhouse, and even though Nick Foles suffered a collarbone injury in week nine, they’ll continue their wrath once he returns. They carry a 6-2 record so far this season, despite LeSean McCoy’s early under-performance. With Shady getting back into his regular shape, the Eagles have been and will continue to be a force when Foles is healthy.

What better way to wrap it up than with a good old Super Bowl prediction? I predict the Super Bowl to consist of the Patriots and the Packers, with Aaron Rodgers leading Green Bay to a Super Bowl win. Though these two teams were not my mid season top picks, I feel that they both have what it takes to win playoff games. Denver and Philadelphia may be owning the regular season, but the postseason is a whole other monster.
