Support of Mike Brown and Eric Garner grew all across the nation in response to the no indictment rulings for officers Darren Wilson and Daniel Pantaleo.

Garner was killed back in June while being arrested for illegally selling cigarettes. When he resisted arrest, officer Pantaleo placed him in, and maintained, a chokehold, even after Garner’s cries of “I can’t breathe.” The phrase became a rallying cry for protestors and was even put on shirts which many notable athletes wore such as Derrick Rose and LeBron James.

Mike Brown, an unarmed black teen killed in August, received widespread support as well. In his hometown, Ferguson, Missouri, protests broke out immediately after the ruling was made. Protesters chanted, “Hands up, don’t shoot!” due to the belief that Brown had died while surrendering. Players of the St. Louis Rams, a professional football team located near Ferguson, also came out before the game with their hands up in support of Brown. “Die in’s” have been held across the country in support of Brown and Garner.
