Beat Your Feet

Jaylen Prescott, Staff Writer

Have you ever seen a dance and wanted to take the time and learn how to do it?

Well, one thing to keep in mind is that, for most dances, it isn’t as easy as it looks; it takes fundamentals and practice. The District of Columbia is common for a dance called “beating your feet,” a dance many DMV natives do while listening to gogo music, which is common in DC.

“Beating your feet” every single move is very important. In order to get it down well you have to sit and listen and get a rhythm. Once a dancer is able to get with the rhythm, she/he tends to freestyle and get creative, making up moves. This dance involves your whole body such as your arms, head, torso, and legs. It is a way to show skill and express yourself. Many who do the dance have fun doing it, and it is a way for them to get away from life. In fact, there is a dance session every week that takes place on Missouri Avenue. Everyone gets the chance to battle one another and showcase their skills for a couple of hours.

Some start at a young age when they are taught by older siblings, but most don’t learn about the dance until they are teenagers.

This dance itself is amusing and catches the eye when you see it, as you sit and wonder how a dancer did a move or wonder how long it took him or her to get it down.
