The Path to March Madness: NCAA Basketball

Start calling your friends, grabbing your pencils, and printing your brackets; it’s time to sit down in your comfortable seat and do some research. That’s right, it’s almost time for March Madness. It’s almost that time of year when thrilling games, heartbreaking upsets, and nonstop entertainment take center stage. The NCAA tournament begins on March 17, so it’s time to look back at this year’s college season and look ahead to the tournament.

It’s no surprise that the Kentucky Wildcats have looked even better in the 2014-15 season than they did last year when they went all the way to the final. After a tough loss in last year’s championship game, Kentucky is bigger and better this season, has finally lived up to preseason expectations, and sit atop the nation with a staggering 26-0 record. A question of great importance to college basketball fans around the country is whether or not the Wildcats will finish the season undefeated, and whether they will bring home a championship. Kentucky should have no problem finishing the regular season without a loss, but as we all know, March Madness is a whole other monster, and it is known for heartbreak. The Wildcats will head into the tournament undefeated, but I predict that their perfect season will be diminished by a more experienced team in the championship game. However, if you’re filling out a bracket, it’s hard to pick against Kentucky.

Wisconsin center Frank Kaminsky comes in as my top player for the 2014-15 season, with a slight edge over Duke freshman Jahlil Okafor. Kaminsky has averaged around 18 points and 8 rebounds per game this year, very similar to Okafor’s stat line. However, Kaminsky has shot nearly 40% from the three-point-line; very impressive for a seven-foot-tall center. Kaminsky should receive the John R. Wooden Award at the end of this season, as he hopes to lead the number 5 Badgers to a strong tournament run.

The most overrated team in my book this year – and in years past – is Gonzaga. They currently hold a 26-1 record and are the third-ranked team, but their schedule, to put it quite simple, is easy. The only top-ten team they have faced is Arizona, which provided their only loss. If they had a more competitive schedule, which they obviously will if they go deep in the tournament, they would not stand a chance. My most underrated team is Arizona. The Wildcats hold a 24-3 record, and have held the seventh ranking firmly. Their three losses came to unranked teams, so it is understandable that many people do not take them seriously. However, because of that fact, many people forget the fact that Arizona has not yet lost to a ranked team. As boring as it may seem, my Final Four predictions match Ryun’s completely: Kentucky, Duke, Wisconsin, and Virginia. The national championship will be a battle of the best coaches in the game: Coach K versus Coach Calipari. Unfortunately for Maryland fans, I predict that Duke will win the national championship due to their high-powered, efficient offense, in a dramatic face-off against the dangerous Kentucky Wildcats.
