Welcome to The Neighbourhood

Welcome to The Neighbourhood

The Neighbourhood, or The NBHD, is an indie rock group from California that formed in August of 2011. The band consists of vocalist Jesse Rutherford, guitarist Jeremy Freedman, guitarist Zach Abels, bassist Mikey Margott, and drummer Bryan Sammis.

When asked about the type of music that The Neighbourhood produces, Sammis told Interview magazine—a magazine that features conversations with well-known people– “If I had to describe it to my grandma, I would tell her that it was dark pop music, pop music that wasn’t all sunshine and butterflies.”

The NBHD have taken the country by storm with their hit track “Sweater Weather,” which reached the number one spot on Billboard’s US Alternative Chart in June, 2013. That same month, the Neighborhood also performed “Sweater Weather” on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

The NBHD members lived around the same area and were a part of the same music scene when they were younger. Sammis revealed in an interview with Hollywire—a site which posts exclusive interviews and behind-the-scenes footage with celebrities—that because he knew Rutherford, he heard the first version of “Sweater Weather” even before he became a part of The NBHD. He further explains that hearing the track pushed him and Margott to get involved with the group.

When asked about playing “Sweater Weather” live, and whether or not it still feels new to play, Sammis said, “It’s still fun. It’s fun because people still like that song, and the fact that, when you play a song, seeing people getting into it and recognizing it and singing it back is cool.”

The Neighbourhood’s first full-length album, I Love You, debuted at number 39 on Billboard’s 200 album charts the month it was released. When Rolling Stone premiered

he band’s album, they declared it to consist of “moody, atmospheric rock tracks.”

Artistically, the band is not only known for their music, but their black-and-white pictures and videos, as well. Sammis told Hollywire that the black-and-white sets “the mood” for the music they put out. In the same interview, Rutherford also expressed his desire for the fans of the band to feel influenced by the band’s music.

In the summer of 2013, The NBHD gave their fans an opportunity to hear them live when they joined bands like The 1975 on The Love Collection Tour. Then, in the autumn months, The NBHD headed out on tour with Imagine Dragons.
