In the midst of everything going on in the world, President Trump just caused even more outrage. On 4/13, he released a picture seemingly depicting himself as Jesus. The image shows Trump, dressed in a white robe, laying his healing hand on the head of someone as a white light is emitted from his other hand. The image also displays various elements of military forces above him that are intended to resemble angels. Almost immediately after its release, there was outrage.
Reactions to this image have been fairly identical across the country. Former Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene – once an outspoken advocate of Trump – called the picture “blasphemous” and that she “as a Christian was deeply offended.”
After being shown the picture, Hien Le, a 9th grade student at Paint Branch, who considers herself a democrat, said that it was “weird, blasphemous, and that his [Trump’s] explanation for it was really weird, with him saying he ‘thought he was a doctor’”
Adezae Agbakwuru, a junior at Paint Branch, “wasn’t shocked, but was deeply disgusted, and was questioning his sanity and questioning why he used religion as his platform if he doesn’t really care about religion.”
Trump did not apologize for the picture being offensive. Pope Leo XIV, President Trump, and even Vice-President JD Vance, a fairly recent convert to Catholicism, have been trading critiques over the image. Pope Leo said, “God rejects prayers of leaders who start wars.” according to his Palm Sunday Homily. President Trump replied by saying in a tweet that Pope Leo “was wrong… cannot have a nuclear Iran… (Pope Leo) would not be happy with the end result.” The post has since been deleted.
