NBA Predictions 2016-17: SMACKTALK

Aliyu Saadu, Staff Writer

The NBA season is heading into December, and it is time to make some predictions. My MVP will be Oklahoma City Thunder point guard Russell Westbrook. This guy is averaging a triple-double with 31.2 points, 10.5 rebounds, and 11.3 assists per game. Bold Prediction: He will break the record for most triple-doubles in a single season set by Oscar Robinson with 41 in the 1961-62 season.

My All-NBA first team will be Westbrook, James Harden, LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and Deandre Jordan. My Coach of the Year will be Tom Thibodeau of the Minnesota Timberwolves because I think the young Timberwolves will make the play-offs because Andrew Wiggins and Karl Anthony Towns will carry this team and get them in the play-offs. My Rookie of the Year will be Joel Embiid because this guy is averaging 18.2 points per game and 7.8 rebounds per game, which means this guy is good and will be a runaway Rookie of the Year. The rookie class this year is really weak, so there is nobody that is even close to competing with Embiid for the honor. My Sixth Man of the Year will be Clippers shooting guard Jamal Crawford, because he is literally the only bench player who can actually score. My Defensive Player of the Year will be Kawhi Leonard, because he is a game-changing defender who can get a big steal to win the game, and he is the best defender in the NBA.

My conference finals predictions are pretty obvious. In the West, it will be the Los Angeles Clippers vs the Golden State Warriors with the Warriors winning it in 7 games because of their play-off experience. They have been to two straight finals, and I don’t see the Clippers beating them at all. In the East, it will be a rematch of the 2016 conference finals between the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Toronto Raptors. The Cavaliers will win in 5 games because of James, who will make the sure the Cavs are focused to play at their best in the play-offs.

The 2017 NBA Finals will be – for the third straight year – a battle between the Warriors and the Cavaliers, with the Cavaliers winning for the second straight year in seven games because of LeBron – who is a beast in the play-offs – and the fact that the Cavs have a better bench than the Warriors. My finals MVP will be LeBron because he will average a triple double in the finals, and he will do everything he can to win his fourth ring.

If he does win his fourth finals MVP, that will place him second on the all-time list behind Michael Jordan, who won six NBA titles and six finals MVP’s. LeBron is a dominant player and will carry his team to cement his status as the best player of his generation. LeBron ranks fourth on the all-time scoring list with 5,572 points and sits behind only Jordan, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, and Kobe Bryant. This season will be an exciting one where records are broken, and good play in the league will make it fun to watch.
