What Do You Expect From the Vaccines?

The Vaccines have not been around as long as other bands have, but they were quick to get a record deal. How? It’s all the power of their music.

The Vaccines are a band THAT formed in West London in 2010. The quartet consists of vocalist Justin Young, guitarist Freddie Cowan, bassist Arni Arnason, and drummer Pete Robertson.

The band uploaded their demo If You Wanna to YouTube in the summer of 2010. Not too long after, The Vaccines received praise from people including BBC Radio One DJ Zane Lowe, who named the demo the “Hottest record in the world” on his show, The Zane Lowe Show, in August.

Building on that support, The Vaccines went on their debut tour of the UK from September 2010 to November 2010. Almost immediately after the tour started, many of their shows became sold out and people like Marcus Mumford (of Mumford and Sons) and members of the band The Maccabees made sure to make their way into the audience. In October, 2010, The Guardian gave The Vaccines a 4/5 rating on one of their performances at a pub called The Flowerpot in London.

On November 29, 2010, The Vaccines released their debut single “Wreckin’ Bar (Ra Ra Ra)”/”Blow It Up” in the UK on Marshall Teller Records. “Wreckin’ Bar (Ra Ra Ra),” which is only one minute and twenty-four seconds long, was named the Track of the Day by Q magazine.

The band signed with Columbia Records in 2011 and released their debut album, What Did You Expect from the Vaccines? On March 14th of that year. They were nominated for a Critic’s Choice Brit Award as well as an MTV Award for Best New Band of 2011.

Performing in the U.S. for the first time as a group, The Vaccines made their debut on network television when they performed “If You Wanna” on The Late Show with David Letterman.

In the fall of 2011, The Vaccines had to postpone their tour of the U.S. and Japan due to a vocal issue experienced by Young. He underwent multiple surgeries, but as soon as he was better, the band began working on their second album. The album, which would come to be titled Come of Age, was released on September 3, 2012 in the UK, and reached the number one position on the charts there. The record was also certified gold within the first three weeks of its release.

The Vaccines were again nominated for a Brit Award in 2013, and, although they didn’t win, they were able to translate the respect they’d been steadily receiving from critics into their first headlining tour of the United States, which began in Boston, Massachusetts in January 2013. In fact, 2013 has been a big year for the band as they have also performed at the O2 Arena in London—their biggest show to date—as well as at Hyde Park, where they supported The Rolling Stones.

In August, 2013, The Vaccines released an EP titled Melody Calling. They told NME magazine that they had begun working on their third album. Their sound has changed a bit along the way, going from rocky to more alternative, which coincided with the release of their second album. The band continues to tour in the UK, playing a variety of songs with a variety of sounds.
