Women’s Rights Not Equal Around the World

Many countries around the world have laws in place that restrict the rights of women. These limitations include denying the right to free speech and privileges like driving. Women can be punished of these countries for doing simple things like driving. These restrictions have occurred more in Middle Eastern countries like Afghanistan.

In the last few months, women in Saudi Arabia organized protests around the government’s denial of driving rights. These protests have centered primarily on breaking the law by driving. According to CNN, the Saudi Arabian government has only warned of punishment for breaking this law so far. There are other restrictions, including one that bars women from working, or even learning, unless they receive permission from a male. Also there have been reported abuses of women in countries like Afghanistan where women have been sold to settle disputes.

These events were heard all around the world and caused outrage from many groups, especially feminist groups such as the Women’s Freedom Organization. Another strong response came from Amnesty International, a group which promotes the rights of all people through social media and donations. Important feminine voices like Yanar Mohammed give speeches to get governments to give women the rights they deserve in Middle Eastern countries. Groups like the United Nations attempt to give women rights in foreign countries through conventions and peace talks. Many Middle Eastern government officials argue that these restrictions are tradition and must be kept, but feminist groups insist that as the world changes they too must change and adapt.
