Looking for something to do during the winter and spring so you won’t be inside all day? While being inside isn’t a bad thing, you should still be able to get some fresh air when winter hits. Having outdoor activities you can have fun with during the winter is good for your body and helps get you ready for spring.
While winter is coming to an end, you still have time to take advantage of the last few cold days to do some winter activities. Sure, some people prefer to stay inside during the cold weather, but there are plenty of activities that can draw them out so they can have a good time with their family and friends. One of the activities is Ice skating, which is really fun to do. Ice skating can be hard at first, but once you get the hang of it, it’s pretty easy. Most ice skating places start to open somewhere at the end of November and close in February. Some of the places to ice skate in our area include The Gardens Ice House in Laurel, Wheaton Ice Arena in Wheaton, Columbia Ice Rink in Columbia, and The Rockville Ice Arena in Rockville. All of these places are about 15-30 minutes away from Burtonsville.
Another activity that you can do during the winter is snowboarding and skiing. Some places near Burtonsville are Roundtop Mountain Resort in York County PA, Liberty Mountain Resort in Carroll Valley, PA, and Wisp Resort in McHenry, MD. My family and I went to Liberty Mountain Resort, which was about two hours away. In this resort, there is also snow tubing, which is part of the reason this resort is very popular. Snowboarding and skiing are a bit like ice skating in that they are very fun and pretty easy to learn. Liberty Mountain Resort opens during late November or early December, depending on how much snow they get. The other two resorts are similar in terms of when they open and what they offer.
While Christmas has passed and light displays are dimmed for the season, it is always good to think ahead to next year. Light exhibits are very popular during the winter, especially during the holidays. These open up in late November and run through early January. Some of these include the Garden of Lights at Brookside Gardens in Wheaton, Gaithersburg Winter Lights Festival in Gaithersburg. Each of these light festivals is about 15-25 minutes away from Burtonsville.
When spring finally starts to arrive in mid-March and blossoms start showing up in early April, you can really start to feel the weather change from cold to warm. Once the weather starts to get warmer, there are more activities that you can do with your friends and family that start to become available. One of them includes going to the park for picnics with friends or family. Some parks in Burtonsville are the Burtonsville Local Park and the McKnew Local Park. Also close to Burtonsville are Fairland Recreational Park in Fairland and Wheaton Regional Park in Wheaton. These are parks that are about 5-20 minutes away from Burtonsville.
People’s attitudes start to change as flowers start to bloom, the weather warms up, and leaves and grass start to pop and get their color back. You can really see the weather change and the way nature is responding to the warmer temperatures. Another activity you can do once spring hits, and you want to get outside is gardening. Many people like to garden so that their house looks nice, and flowers and plants add a nice detail inside or out. Another activity you could do is go flower picking at gardens in Maryland, so you can take fresh flowers home. Some flower-picking places near Burtonsville are Beauty Blooms Farm in Mt. Airy, Joy in Hand Flower Farm in Forest Hill, and the Frederick Flower Farm in Frederick. These flower-picking places are a bit of a drive, as each is between 45 minutes and 1 hour away.
Another activity you can do is simply hang out with friends. You and your friends can celebrate the warm weather by going out to coffee places such as Centrado Cafe Shop on Route 198 near Burtonsville Town Center, Haraz Coffee House, or Playa Bowls in Burtonsville Town Square. These coffee shops are all about 5-10 minutes away from PB. Centrado Cafe and Haraz Coffee also have pastries and breakfast. Playa Bowls doesn’t have pastries or larger breakfasts, but they do have breakfast smoothies and smoothie bowls.
While the cold winter days are unfortunately starting to come to an end, it’s not too late to take advantage of them to do some winter activities. When spring starts to make its way through the cold and temperatures begin to warm up, everyone will start coming out as warmer temps mean more things to do outside. No matter what season it is, remember to find time to get outside to get your body moving and get some fresh air!
