Feminism

Don’t Hate What You Don’t Understand

Tina Daramy, Staff Writer

Feminism has been around for many years and, as times have changed, so has feminism. While some people label women who seek equal rights and equal treatment as ugly, man-hating, whiny women who hate society, the truth is, these women are simply seeking to bring the discussion of equality for all people to the forefront of peoples’ minds.

When people hear the words “feminist” or “feminism,” they often conjure up negative associations or ideas about these women, who are even seen as fanatical extremists. Those who seek to critique them assume that feminists believe women are better than men or that women deserve special privileges, or women are victims. However, all feminists really strive for is positivity. Why people fighting for a positive cause – in this case bringing attention to the difficulty that women still face in society – still must deal with negativity and criticism is beyond comprehension. Of course, this criticism and hatred usually comes from the people who don’t understand feminism and choose not to understand how important it truly is.

Feminists believe that all humans, male and female, should have equal rights and opportunities and believe that women should have control over their lives and bodies. These women strive to empower other women and young girls, but critics bash them for their efforts. People fail to realize that the goal of a feminist is not to promote one gender over another or antagonize men. Another factor in the way of feminism is that some feel that feminism isn’t relevant anymore, that times have changed and equality is everywhere.

Despite great efforts put forth by feminists, some people have also put forth a strong effort to show their anger and frustration towards feminism. Critics even include female groups such as the organization “Women Against Feminism.” This group states opinions such as “feminism is destructive” and “feminists like to play the victim.” However, these women – just like male critics of feminism – don’t seem to truly grasp what feminism really is.

As a society, it is time for all of us to encourage those who seek equality instead of bashing their beliefs.
